Jimbo's Lake Lanier Fishing Guide Report: 2/19/2012

Hey Gang -

I was out on trips all this past week and we had some great success through the week, particularly with the big girls.

We worked creek ditches, secondary points, and pockets for the majority of our fish. However, I will say that there are a few choice main lake points that produced some of the pigs pictured above. We also found some creeks holding big fish, particularly in the ditches. These fish were in or near a ditch holding next to cover in water less than 15 feet deep. Some of the big fish we caught were full of eggs too, so you know what is around the corner. The fish we caught were big enough to be over 6 pounds by the look, but upon further examination, the extra bulk was produced from roe, not muscle. Thus many of the fish weighed just over or just under 5 pounds. Still, they are great fish and very healthy.

The jerkbait and jig produced many big fish this week, along with the Davis Shaky Head tipped with a trick worm. We also caught several solid fish on the FHS and a crankbait - it just depended on the day. I was out today on a full day trip as well - even in the cold and rain, we pounded a good sack and had around 20 fish. Everything today was on the jerkbait - I will include pics from today's trip and some more from this week in my next post.

I am also pleased to report that one of my recent customers won the Co-Angler side of the BFL yesterday - awesome work Seth! We worked on the FHS and jig and where/how to use them from the back of the boat. His confidence grew and he was able to best the field with his new-found confidence in these baits. He has promised me a picture with his trophy soon - I will share once I receive it!

I am full this entire week through next Sunday, but I do have a couple of dates open the week of Feb 27th. Give me a ring if you would like to get out and hammer the hogs!!

Hey Everyone -

I hope everyone is well and enjoying life! It has been a fantastic week on Lanier for us this past week. I was out on trips everyday this past week and we experienced some awesome results. I have highlighted some of the week's action below.

On Tuesday, I was out with the "Unknown Angler". Unknown and I had an awesome day together and caught some great fish through the day. Our main baits included the Davis Shaky Head, Truit Jerkbaits, and the FHS. We caught fish shallow through the AM in creek ditches and then transitioned out to cover in 18-22 feet on the main lake for our fish in the afternoon. Our best 5 went 17 pounds for the day. Great job to the unknown! See you again soon!

On Wednesday, we had a stellar day. Bob and his buddy John came up from the Vidalia, GA area to catch some spots. I did not disappoint!! Bob and John drilled 30 bass that day, with their best 5 going a Whopping 20 pounds and 3 ounces. We threw crankbaits, worms, spoons, and the FHS for the majority of our fish. We started shallow and stayed shallow most of the day in creeks and on the main lake. John had bragging rights for the day with a 5 pound, 5 ounce TANK of a spotted bass - great fish John! Looking forward to seeing you guys again soon!

On Thursday, I had the pleasure of taking out Sam B. Sam and I met at Bass Pro and firmed up a trip at the Great Southern Fishing Show. Sam wanted to learn a little more about the lake and understand strategies for patterning and catching spotted bass in early spring. We worked on a couple of specific strategies. During our short afternoon trip, we caught fish on a Davis Shaky Head and a jig. The fish were in the 20-25 feet range and all were very good fish. We worked main lake points and secondary points for our fish. Sam picked up the use of the Shaky Head very quickly - he was a quick study!! Together, he and I hammered an 18 pound sack of spots. He is pictured above with 4 of these awesome fish. Nice work Sam - great day on the water and looking forward to next time. And yes folks, the pics are of different fish - they were just all studs!

I wanted to end this report with an email that a recent customer sent me, unsolicited, regarding a trip on my boat in late January:

"I flew from East TX to spend a day on Lanier with Jimbo and my breaux-n-law, Phil. When we booked the trip, we were expecting 60 degree Spring weather, what we got was a 15 mph North wind, cold front passage, rain in the a.m. and bluebird skies in the p.m. Not the best fishing conditions, but Jimbo pressed on throughout the day to make sure we were on fish and taking our best shot at big spots. No pics of my 3.9 personal best, (a Texas thing), but I had a great time and felt that Jimbo was the hardest working man on the boat. A note on equipment: Jimbo's ZX250 Skeeter provided a great ride and stable platform on rough water. He provided super smooth Shimano Chronarchs and Sahara spins on GLoomis/Denali rods. Hey Everyone -

We had a very good week on the pond last week. I was out on the water everyday (thanks to everyone for the calls - I am grateful!!) and our worst day was 15 pounds for our best 5.

I found the lower lake to be inconsistent, so we went North and found a very solid pattern for spots that we ran every day last week. My clients enjoyed some very consistent catches of 15 pounds plus daily with great numbers as well. We also searched the likely areas for big largemouth daily but could only catch the bucks when we tried. The females will be there soon without question, especially with the weather we have forecasted in the coming days.

While the areas did not change much for us from day to day, the preferred bait certainly did. We focused on ditches in shallow water early, then transitioned to cover in those same ditches, as well as to main-river points and sharp drops with cover in 15 - 32 feet of water.

The Fish Head Spin was our main weapon, and the supporting cast included: jigs, Davis Shaky Heads, spoons, crankbaits, and jerkbaits. There was one day the jig just ruled from start to finish, but the other days it was the FHS and one or two of the above.

Lake Lanier Fishing Guide Report: 1/27/2012

Hello Everybody -

It has been another great week on Lanier for us. The lake has came up nearly 2 feet in the recent days. I have had trips all week, and we have continued to hammer monster spots up shallow all week long. It has been a blast out there.

I was out with Bayou Betty from GON this week - we had a great trip and got some super video - look for that soon. I am also thrilled to report that BB got her personal best spotted bass with me this week - just under 5 pounds - what a donkey!

Also this week, I had out one of my repeat customer, Roger M. Roger and I struggled through the afternoon a bit, then pounded some really good fish in the last hour of the day. Great work Roger - way to stick with it.

Today, I had out my good customer Phil Stewart. Phil brought out his buddy Kirk who was visiting from Texas. We had a blast and caught a very good sack of fish, including the 4 pound, 12 oz. toad pictured above - great day Phil and nice work to both you and Kirk!

We have been fishing creeks as well as main lake for these toads. The Fish Head Spin, crankbaits, Truit Jerkbaits, swimbaits, jigs, and Davis Shaky Heads have all bagged big ones this week. And, another quick plug, every plastic or jig I throw is soaked in the Magic!!

I am out on another full day trip tomorrow, but I do have some days open next week. The weather looks nice and warm next week - plenty of sunny weather and shallow fish- let's go catch 'em!! Give me a ring or drop me a note.

Hey Everyone -

It has been a phenomenal week on Lanier this week for us - we have had some outstanding success with big fish and big sacks. We have caught some TRUCKS this week, including a trophy spot that weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces and a LM that weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces. Both of these big fish, caught on Wednesday and Thursday, anchored 19-20 pound + sacks.

You can fish deep if you want, but these monsters have came in 18 feet of water or less, and many from 1-6 feet of water. Given the long range forecast with highs in the 50's and 60's, I don't expect this to change. Based on the LM catches that we have experienced plus what has been reported to me, I believe the largemouth are in pre-spawn mode already. Lot's of big lips were caught this week, including an 8.3 that I know of on Sunday, a 26.5 sack of lips to win a tournament on Sunday, as well as 34.43 lbs sack of heads up North on Tuesday (Here's to you Joe - nice catch, beautiful sack brother!)

Our main weapon this week for the big fish has been the Fish Head Spin and a crankbait. The 6.5 spot came on a FHS, and the 8.2 LM came on a crankbait. When the moving bait bite has slowed down, we have been using a trick worm on a Davis Shaky Head to get bit up shallow. We have been focusing on points at the mouths of creeks and the shallow portion of ditches for our fish.

I had some great customers this week including Justin and his Dad and Person X. Justin, his dad and I had a great day on Wednesday and caught several very nice fish. Person X was with me on Thursday when I caught the big spot, and he is sporting some 4 pounders of his own - nice work X!!

I will be at the Great Southern Fishing Show on Saturday and Sunday and will be discussing how I use the FHS to catch monster spots. I have a seminar at 10 AM on Saturday, and 10:30 AM on Sunday in the Trout room. Hope to see you there.

Hey Everyone -
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who took the opportunity to come see me this weekend at either the Atlanta Boat Show or Bass Pro Shops. It was a great weekend of teaching and I enjoyed meeting everyone.
I have since seen some very kind comments on this board and GON from those who visited. Thank you very much - I appreciate the feedback and your support! Hopefully, the information that I shared on the Fish Head Spin will help your fishing.
I focus my efforts with my customers on teaching. I want them to walk away with knowledge that will lead them to improved success on the water. I recently received a couple of emails from my customers that I wanted to share with everyone.
The first is from a customer of mine who fishes with me regularly on Lanier, and then takes the information/training and applies it to his home lake, Lake Hartwell:
"Hey Jim, Happy New Year! Some mighty big toads you be showing off. I just wanted to take a moment to share with you that your help and instruction with me has produced some fabulous results. I have had absolutely the best 3 months of fishing in all my time up on Hartwell. I mean it has simply been outragous. I have caught way more fish and much, much better fish than ever before. Some of my success has been due to the shakey head and drop shot techniques you taught me. Much of it has also come by fishing smarter, better locations and not working extended areas, but fishing quality spots and moving on quicker. I have gone blank in a number of locations and then pull up on one and whack 'em so hard I just get giddy. For me, its just been amazing. I will be checking in with you in mid to late Feburary as I would like to develop a better arsenal for the pre spawn and spawning periods. Hopefully by then I will have acquired a Lowrance sonar unit and we can review its operational functions to help me maximize the investment. Sincerely, thanks so much for helping me dramatically improve this past season's time on my home waters"
Shortly after this email, I received another one from a recent customer regarding the Sworming Hornet Video I shot recently with Rick Steckleberg in addition to our fishing day in November:
"AWESOME stuff is the norm when i open your weekly emails. Only problem is I want to go fishing at the end of each email. But God has blessed us with lots of work, so I'll keep working and re-filling the coffers and I'll see ya soon. You are a great pitch man. Im going to buy 100's of dollars worth of fish head spins so i can win....good video. By the way when I fished with you in November I watched you drag the fish head spin in ditches. So I was at lake Jackson for our first tourney of the year(past sunday), and I dragged the fish head spin across points on the lower end of lake and caught 3 nice spots!!! - thanks to your demo. great reports man, thank you for all of them"

Hello Everyone -

Fishing on the pond has been great over the past few days. I had trips Friday - Sunday this past weekend. Most of my clients requested to remain "incognito" and not be plastered all over the BFHP - a request which I certainly understand and respect. So, the only pictures you get are mostly of my ugly mug with some pigs. LOL!

On Friday, we fished ditches shallow out to about 20 feet for most of our fish. We had a great sack of fish on a FHS as well as a Shaky Head worm. On Saturday and Sunday, the clouds and rainy weather moved in, so we shifted out deep for most of our fish. We worked jigs and spoons in timber around creek ditches through the day for some great catches. On Sunday, we started shallow and whacked a great sack in about 30 minutes on a Fish Head Spin. When that stopped, we switched to the timber with a jig and a spoon and went to work. Lots of action through the day and some really nice spots. There are some big ones out deep, but don't discount the shallow bite, even in the cloudy weather. If you have a "5 bite" mindset, you can still go shallow and hammer a big sack if you are in the right places. I know of some 20 pound + sacks that were caught over the weekend in local tournaments that came very shallow - most competitors only got 5 bites through the day though. Just depends on what you want to do. Out deep we are catching 12-18 fish a day - not all are studs out there though.

Also, I will be appearing at Bass Pro Shops this Saturday morning with deep water expert Phil Johnson. Phil and I will we working over the tank to demonstrate some winter tactics for spotted bass. I will be focusing on the Fish Head Spin and Phil will be talking about the drop shot and deep water spooning. After that, Phil and I are headed down to Atlanta to speak at the boat show. We have teamed up with Ken Sturdivant and will be doing presentations at the "Let's Go Fishing" Center presented by Allstate - Building C, Booth 632. Phil and I are speaking on Friday and Saturday afternoon. We start Friday at 5:30 PM and Saturday at 3:30 PM - hope to see everyone down there or out at Bass Pro Shops.

Hey Everybody - Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday. I had some great trips over the weekend with several new customers and we had great results. Thanks to everyone who came out with me!! I appreciate your business!!

On Friday, I had out Roger who was looking to get the feel of places to fish during the winter. We mainly worked on the shaky head and the presentation of the bait during this time of year. The bite has been very light and it requires some focus to detect a strike. We worked on this together through the afternoon and Roger picked it up well. I am honored to say that Roger caught the biggest spot he has ever caught with me that day - the 4 lbs, 8 oz Toad pictured above - great catch Roger!!

I started Saturday morning off shooting a video with Rick Steckelberg (Owner of Sworming Hornet Lures) and his partner Kevin Stowers. Richy Rich from LanierMAPPED.com was our video man, and he made us look good (tougher job for him with me involved! LOL). We caught some good fish on the Fish Head Spin that morning, and demonstrated the use of the new Fish Head Swarm, and we also spent time with the Fish Head Dude, the Fish Head Shaker, and the Fish Head Drop Shot bait. I think the highlight of the video is the conversation that Rick and I have regarding the history of the baits to include their creation, as well as inside tips and tricks to catch more fish while using Sworming Hornet Lures. Rick will be taking the video out to I-Cast in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks, and I will have it posted on my site upon its publishing. Should be out soon - I will keep you all posted - I think you will enjoy the information and find it very beneficial!!

On Saturday afternoon, I had a half-day trip with Joey and his pal Kenny who was down from Ohio visiting. We took out Kenny's boat and worked on ditch fishing. We had a nice sack on a shaky head worm - Kenny turned out to be the star of the day as he stuck several good fish including a pig that was right at 5 pounds. Nice work to you both - great fishing!

On Sunday, I had the pleasure of taking out James and Coach. These guys were a lot of fun and the fish cooperated nicely for us. They bagged a 17 pound sack on Sunday. Ol' Coach took big fish honors for the day with a 4 pound spot - James was close with a 3 lbs, 12 oz spot, but he still had to buy dinner that night! LOL! We caught our fish Sunday in and around ditches, with fish coming anywhere from 4 feet to 30 feet deep. Overall, it was a great day. Coach and James - Great job out there!!

I have Thursday, Friday, and Saturday open this week if anyone would like to get out. The weather will be warming up by then and the fish should be more concentrated with the colder weather. Hello Friends and Sponsors -

Happy Holidays to all and I hope this note finds you all well and enjoying the season with family and friends!

We have had an outstanding couple of weeks on Lake Lanier with some excellent success and some great trips!

I have been blessed in that I have had experienced anglers all the way to folks new to bass fishing over the past couple of weeks, and all have been successful. I always enjoy teaching and providing insights on bass fishing and see it manifest immediately in the results.

We have been focusing our efforts shallow for the most part, but have seen a greater progression of the larger spots out to deeper water over the past week or so. This past week, we had an outstanding week for numbers, but not as many big fish as the week before. I was out with Sam from Flowery Branch on one day of note, and together we caught 37 bass in a four hour period! In December! Great stuff. We also had several days with catches numbering from 15-25 a day with most fish being in the 2-3 pound range.

We have been catching the bigger fish shallow on a crankbait and jerkbait, particularly in the early AM and late afternoon, and a jig and worm have been very productive through the day. We have also been targeting some fish in the creek ditches in 18-25 feet of water. These fish have been eating a spoon and a shaky head worm very well. A Fish Head Spin is also working on these fish, as well as a jerkbait and crankbait at times.

I have included some pictures from the action over the last couple of weeks. Thanks to everyone that was out with me!!

I am currently in Indiana visiting family for the holidays, but will be back in town by December 27th.

I was back out on a mid-day trip with David and his son Michael yesterday. They had fished Lanier several times before without much success, and wanted a little help.

I was happy to provide just that, a little help, because they didn't need much! This was an experienced father/son duo - these guys could flat fish!! They were great with a rod and reel and really made it happen on the water, and they were a blast to be with!!

They bagged a 17 lbs, 3 oz sack in about 4 hours of fishing yesterday. Michael took big fish honors with a 4 lbs, 5 oz chunk on his third cast of the day. Dad won the numbers battle, but he was never far behind on the size - he just never quite made it over 4 lbs. I think location adjustments were all that was required for these two. They too thought you had to go deep to catch fish this time of year. Not the case as they learned. All fish were caught on a crankbait in 12 feet of water or less. We stayed in the creeks yesterday due to the high winds on the main lake. If we could of hit a couple of my main lake hot spots, I think we would have made 20 pounds easily.

Hey Everyone -

I was back out on the pond today after a couple of days off. It was nice to catch up on some stuff around the house and get ready for Christmas. My "honey do" list was long and past due!

Anyway, I went out with my good buddy Phil Johnson today to prep for my weekend trips. We had an awesome day and was glad to find out the cold front did not change my fish at all. We caught fish through the day on worms, jigs, crankbaits, and even played in the timber a little with a spoon and dropshot. All of our good fish came in 12 feet of water or less as has been the case for a month or more now.

We caught fish back in creeks as well as out on the main lake. We focused on pockets for the most part as well as main lake and secondary points. Our best 5 went 18.2 pounds today - the 2 above weighed 4.9 and 4.3.

A special thanks to Bryan over at Hinkle Marine Parts for the awesome shirt I am sporting in the picture. As I mentioned before, I go to Mashburn for all my service needs, and Bryan handles my parts - he does an awesome job. Keep those guys in mind for your part needs.

Hey Gang -

I was out on Friday and Saturday with Dr. T, the singing dentist, who came all the way from Kentucky to catch some spots. I'm pretty sure he wasn't sorry he came! He is coming back in 3 weeks, and he is already looking forward to the trip!

We had great days both Friday and Saturday. We caught more numbers on Friday, but Saturday was a great big fish day. We caught several in the 3 pound range with a few better ones, including the 5 lbs, 3 oz spot pictured above middle. Doc had never caught a spot over 4 pounds, so he was absolutely thrilled with this pig. Pictures went out immediately to family and friends and then his phone blew up with calls from back home - it was fun to watch the whole thing - he was stoked! Doc was just an awesome guy to fish with - thanks for a great couple of days Doc - see you in December.

Both of Doc's fish pictured above left (fish on far left weighed 3 lbs, 12 oz) were caught on a Vision 110 Jerkbait. And this was not just any Vision 110, it was a jerkbait custom-painted by Daniel Truit in a blue back herring pattern. Daniel is a good buddy of mine and has been fishing the lake for years. He is an outstanding craftsman, and I am sharing this specific information with everyone to help him out as well as everyone else - he is a super guy and these baits will help your fishing. Hey Everyone -

I had some great trips last week with some great people. Some were entertaining customers, some were prepping for tournaments, and some were just learning the lake and different techniques. I particularly enjoy weeks like this and the diversity of the clients - it challenges me to approach each day a bit differently, and I love it. Thanks to everyone for putting their trust in me.

On Wednesday, I was out with Art and his customer Jerry. We had a great morning before the storms rolled in - the bite was solid that morning pre-front and we caught some good fish and tangled with some real pigs that didn't quite make it to the boat...lol.

Thursday, I was out with Russell - he was prepping for a tournament today (Sunday). He popped his first spot over 4 pounds with me and was ecstatic! We had about a 17 pound sack that day with 2 four's and several in the 3 lbs range. He texted me early this AM to let me know he and his grandson already had two good fish in the box (a 4 pounder and 3 pounder) on the stuff I showed him - a very happy guy!

On Friday, I had the pleasure of taking out long-time Lanier angler Marty. We had a fun day and really enjoyed being out together. Marty is a great angler, he just needed some fine-tuning as well as an introduction to some other concepts and techniques to improve his catch rate - we achieved that and then some! Congrats on a great day Marty - they were on fire that morning.

We have been starting every morning throwing a crankbait and catching quality fish in the creeks - very shallow. We have followed that up with jig and worm fishing around key docks and in cover up to 18 feet of water in certain creeks as well as main lake. Sometimes the fish are pulled up in 5-10 feet, sometimes a little deeper. The rain last week piled quality fish up in certain areas and it was on like Donkey Kong in those areas.

Lastly, I want to throw a HUGE congratulations out to my good buddy Scott Barnes. Scott won the Hammond's Tournament yesterday with a 20.5 pound sack of spots - way to go brother - awesome catch!!

Hey Everyone -

I have been out on trips every day this week and the fishing has been very good.

I was out Monday with Paul for an afternoon trip. We fished until dark and had some great success. Most of our fish came on the shaky head. We caught fish from 6 feet - 25 feet deep. Some main lake, some in creeks. Paul spends most of his free time on Hartwell, but because the lakes share some similarities, he is working with me to learn Lanier techniques that he can apply to his fishing on Hartwell. The Shaky Head was our technique for this trip. We worked on electronics and drop-shot during our first trip back in August.

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of taking out Gene and his son Joe for an AM trip. This is a great father-son team that has been with me before. We had a blast together and they caught some solid spots through the morning. We started early back in a creek and caught some good ones then worked our way out to main-lake later in the day. We caught them shallow in the early AM on a crankbait, then transitioned to the shaky head. One of Gene's fish pictured above came from 35 feet, and the other one came from about 2 feet of water on a point. Just shows you that quality fish are everywhere right now.

I took out Chuck yesterday on a full-day trip. We caught several fish up to 3 pounds, but nothing picture worthy. Crankbait was our weapon for our best fish yesterday - most were very shallow. Chuck lost a BIG fish on a crankbait toward the end of the day, we saw the fish swirl after it grabbed the bait up shallow - it was a monster, but only became a legend of fish tales unfortunately. Chuck and I still had a great day of worship together enjoying good fishing and God's beautiful creation.

A quick plug - I have been dipping my plastics in JJ's Magic dye, and I truly believe it makes a big difference. I soak the whole bag in clear dye for a day or so, then dip the tips in chartreuse before they go in the water. I get more bites and the fish hang on longer. The bottom line is that JJ's Magic delivers more bites and more fish. Just the facts!

I am back out on a full day trip tomorrow, and then I have 2 pending trips on Sat and Sunday. I have Monday, Tuesday and Friday open next week if you would like to get out.

Hey Everybody -

It has been a very enjoyable week for me so far. For the last 2 days, I have been out with Steve S. Steve is from Richmond, VA and he called and booked me because he wanted to catch some spotted bass - which he had never done before. He is an avid angler, but has always focused on the largemouth and smallmouth, but never the spots.

As you can see from the pictures above, he has not been disappointed with his trip! We have caught some PIGS over the last 2 days - it has been a blast. We caught over 25 yesterday, and 16 today. Steve is with me for one more day, then back to Virginia. He has already made plans to come back in December, and again next spring for multiple day trips each time. He is an awesome guy and a great angler - a true pleasure to have in my boat. We are both looking forward to our last day tomorrow - it will be fun to see what the weather change will bring. For Wed and Thur, Steve and I have caught fish on jerkbaits, FHS, shaky head, and topwater baits.

Also pictured above is one of my best customers, John. John has been out with me several times this year, and we are scheduled for 1 trip a month for the next 12 months. John is a semi-experienced angler, but has employed me to get him tournament-ready in a year. I have charted a detailed training plan for him by month to include specific techniques as well as lake knowledge. I work with him as a coach during each of our trips. We fish from his boat, and I instruct him on boat positioning and information analysis while on the water (electronics, water conditions, wind, etc.) I think I am more excited than John is about our next year together - I love to teach and John is very receptive to my instruction. He made great strides during our recent trip, and learned the jerkbait quickly. He pegged the nice largemouth above on his 3rd cast with the bait. Nice work John! Next time, big spots!

Hey Everyone -

We have had another good week on Lanier - plenty of topwater and swimbait action.

I was out today with Greg and his son Jett. We had a good day, even with the wind. Greg and Jett were in learning mode, so we ducked back into some pockets to fish. We worked on casting and presentation of a shaky head and various topwater baits. Jett was the star of the day - he is posing above with his dad holding a very solid spot - nice job Jett!

On Friday, I had the pleasure of taking out 91 year-old Bob B. and his grandson Chris. We were out on a full day trip - Bob could really hang in there and still fish very well - you could tell he has done this before a time or two! We had a blast - we caught a good mix of spots and largemouth, and all of our fish came on topwater in or near the wind - most of the fish were in 15 feet of water or less. My instincts were pretty good, and I turned on the video camera just before Chris hooked the largemouth pictured above. Overall, the fishing is good on Lanier right now. This past week, we have caught fish on: topwater, swimbaits, jerkbaits, worms, and of course, the FHS. Some fish have came very shallow (1 foot or less) and some have come as deep as 30 feet around brush. The fish have been changing every day - so, start with a clean slate when you get out and just go fish. If you are graphing fish in the upper levels of the water column, throw topwater or the jerkbait. You may have to hit several holes before you find the active fish, but you can pretty much chase an active topwater/swimbait bite all day if you want to run and gun. If you would prefer, you can also catch fish on a shaky head worm. Look for fish in and around brush and bottom locked - that is a good time to slow down and fish the bottom.

I am happy to report that I am booked everyday next week and weekend through Sunday, with the exception of Thursday. So please give me a ring if you would like to get out either on Thursday, or I have a couple of dates open the following week if you prefer. This is really a fun time to fish.

Hello Everyone -

We had another very good week on Lanier - lots of topwater and swimbait action this week and some nice fish to be had.

The lake is 8.8 feet down and has a 74 degree surface temp. The fish in the lower lake are schooling well right now at the mouths of creeks as well as on the main lake. We have been focusing on these fish all week and have had some great success.

Most of the fish are on and around off-shore structure as well as rocky points throughout the lower lake. There are also many fish roaming and relating strictly to the bait - you often see these fish busting in the channel or over very deep timber as they focus on the movement of the blue backs. These fish can be caught if you are in the area and can cast to the activity. Fish are also positioning over brush and other cover and can be called up on topwater and swimbaits. We have also had good success on a FHS as well as a jerkbait.

I have included a picture of a couple of toads from the tournament today. We had a good turnout with around 25 boats and really helped a great cause. Tim from Hammond's along with others hauled off an entire van full of toys for the Salvation Army. The cold front hurt our schooling bite for sure, but there were still some good ones to be had on top. Lots of short strikes and pull-offs today for us though, but still a bunch of fun. Thanks to all that participated.

Lake Lanier Fishing Report: September 10, 2011

Hey Everyone -

A quick fishing report, and then I will get onto the giveaway. I was out a couple of days this week - my Monday trip postponed due to the weather - too bad because the bite on Monday was awesome with the ultra-low barometric pressure we had as a result of the tropical storm.

Save Monday, the bite has been decent this week. I have continued to focus in the mouths of creeks on rocky areas for my fish. We have caught fish this week on crankbaits, topwater, drop-shot, jigs, spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits. The fish have been suspending up in the water column and have been moving shallower. However, there are still some studs out over the timber in deep water - I was out with Emory D. yesterday afternoon, and he had a MONSTER Spot hung and to the boat over 75 feet of water - my net was locked in my rod box, which didn't prove helpful! A great marketing opportunity missed! Sorry Emory - next time my friend!

Now, onto the important stuff. As we remember 9/11 this weekend and salute all of those affected by this tragic event, I would like to specifically honor our service men and women (active duty or retired) as well as our police officers, firemen and women, and all other positions who by doing their jobs sacrificed their lives that day 10 years ago - as well as those in all the days since that have continued to put their lives on the line daily for our freedom and well being.

Lake Lanier Fishing Report: September 4, 2011

Hello Everyone -

I hope all of you are enjoying a relaxing and safe Labor Day Weekend!

I was out on trips most of the week this past week. There is definitely a change happening and it has been fun to follow - I will address that a little later in this post.

Most of my trips this week were "teaching" trips. Many folks wanted to learn the drop shot presentation and get the feel of catching fish so they could gain confidence in the technique. I enjoy these trips a great deal and love to watch people grow in their skill over a few short hours on the boat. There are plenty of smaller fish to be caught in the 20-30 ft. brush right now, with a few solid fish mixed in - no monsters though. These fish offer the perfect opportunity to learn the drop shot - they will bite!

I actually had the pleasure of taking one gentleman that fishes Hartwell rather than Lanier, but he wanted to learn techniques on Lanier that he could apply to fishing Hartwell. I was honored to work with him - we spent most of our day talking and teaching rather than fishing - I enjoy those days too.

With all that said, there are some big ones available right now. Some of these big fish are shallow, and some are out over deeper water. On my trip Friday, we lost 2 big fish first thing in the morning- one jumped and spit it at the boat, and one broke off during the fight on a strong surge - just bad luck. These fish were shallow over deep water.

During the afternoon, we found fish shallow on rocky points near deep water. I busted off a huge bass in 3 feet of water on topwater - couldn't believe it. I guess it is time to re-spool some rods, although that one was on fresh line - maybe time to move up in line size - LOL!

There is alot of bait making a move back into the creeks right now - keep an eye on this as September progresses and the water cools with the upcoming weather. I am sure the lake will recover some water level, but my understanding is the corp is planning to continue the draw down through the fall through consistent water release. BTW, I have noticed a substantial improvement in the bite when they are pulling water - no surprise really, but it is something to keep in mind.

Through the past week, we have caught fish on: drop shot, topwater, jerkbaits, carolina rigs, spoons, crank baits, and jigs. I am sure other things will work too, but these have been my focus areas.

Lake Lanier Fishing Report: August 21, 2011

Hello Friends and Sponsors -

Even through the hot weather, the fish are still biting on Lanier - not just smaller fish - good SOLID fish are eating in the right places.

I have been throwing a Fish Head Spin and Drop Shot worm for the majority of my fish. Topwater has produced some each day as well, but not the quantity of the drop shot nor the quality of the FHS.

I have been drop-shotting a variety of hand-poured worms and minnow imitations to get bit. Wackem Plastics, Roboworms, as well as the Jackal Cross-Tail Shad and Flash-Trix minnow imitations have worked at one time or another. Colors include: morning dawn, prizm shad, sunrise orange pearl and baby bass.

The FHS has produced some big fish this past week. I have been working the bait to include a pause, thus allowing the bait to drop, which seems to trigger the strikes in most cases.

As far as locations, I have been hitting humps in both main lake and creek areas, as well as ledges and points with steeper breaks near deep water. I have found most of my best fish in 35-40 feet of water. I am also targeting standing timber with tree tops that come to 25-35 feet. These areas seem to hold fish through the day, but some days better than others.

Lake Lanier Fishing Report: August 16, 2011

Hey Gang -

I was out today on a full day trip with Butch, and yesterday with Brian. The weather today was incredible - just awesome to have some cooler temps.

The fishing today and yesterday was awesome. I am pleased to report that I have figured out a good big-fish pattern for August - I have been putting it together for a bit, and thought I had lost a big spot in an area down lake the other day, but couldn't confirm it because it I busted off - could have been a striper, but I didn't think so. Based on the last 2 days, I am pretty confident in the pattern.

Running this pattern the last 2 days my clients and I have caught several solid fish and some good ones. I had one today close to 5 (4-14 on the digitals) and lost a 4 at the boat in the same area. In addition, fish like the one Butch has above are available, as well as an occasional 24 pound striper! (23-6 on the digitals - nice catch Brian!).

I am fishing in 25-30 feet of water, but doing something a bit different. We have been throwing the drop shot, a jig, and a FHS. I have been doing only artificial trips of late - no spot-tail cheating!

My August special is still running - 3.5 hour trips in the AM and PM to "Beat the Heat" at a reduced rate. Of course the standard half and full day trips are available as well. I have Thurs and Sat open this week if anyone is interested in getting out.

Lake Lanier Fishing Report: August 8, 2011

Hey Everyone -

It is certainly August - hot and hotter! The fishing has been up and down over the last week - some good days for numbers and some days for size, and some days not so good for either - LOL!

I was out with Doug H today for our second trip of the summer. Doug is a great guy and recently purchased a brand new Ranger Comanche 520. He is a good angler, just looking to learn Lanier and our spotted bass as he hails from Florida - not quite the same type of fishing - LOL!

We worked on the drop-shot and the fish head spin today. We caught several fish on both, as well as topwater. Most of our fish came from 25 - 35 feet of water on or near brush located close to sharp drops and ledges. We fished down south today, but there has been a solid bite up north as well. I will be out and up North tomorrow in preparation for trips the rest of the week. I am grateful to be busy in August - thanks to all who have put your trust in me.

I had the pleasure of once again taking out Mr. Gene J and his son-in-law Keith today. It was a bit toasty out on the pond, but we still managed some good fish and had a good time together as usual.

The bite was tough in the morning - not much schooling activity where we were and not a very aggressive bite at all. We moved around quite a bit with only a few offers on a drop shot and one decent largemouth on topwater. We mainly stayed on structure, looking deep and shallow for the best concentration of fish. We did see some very shallow activity in the AM, but still I found a good number of quality fish in the 18-25 foot range.

We decided to get a few spot-tails to see if it might help our efforts. Thanks to Phil J for a quick shout out on a new spot tail area - worked great! We labored the afternoon heat and caught several with the spot-tails - only a few areas really seemed to be holding the active fish, and we worked those thoroughly for our bites.

Hey Everyone -

I had the pleasure of taking my two youngest daughters out fishing today - man it got hot, but we had a blast! They had been bugging me alot to take them, especially after seeing the pictures of all the big fish we have been catching lately. So, when I had an off day, I finally made it happen.

My youngest daughter, Olivia, got the hang of things quickly and popped the fish above - a solid 4 pounder - not bad catching a 4 lbs spot at 8 years old. I had to help her lift the rod tip a little when the fish made some runs, but she caught it all on her own. I was a proud papa!

I let the girls fish with spot-tails, and I threw some topwater around through the day and called a couple up, but not big ones. We did see some huge spots breaking over and near the structure, but I was just never in a position to get a quick cast at them.

I still have Thur and Sat open if anyone is interested in catching some fish - hot or not, the fish are still biting!

Lake Lanier Fishing Report: July 16, 2011

Hi Everyone!

I was off the water most of this week as I took a much needed vacation with the family to Myrtle Beach, SC. The kids loved it and we had a great time together.

I did have a trip on Friday of this week and had the honor of taking out one of my best clients, Johnny P. Johnny goes with me once a month or so and we always have fun and I really enjoy his company - he has great stories!

The weather was very odd for July on Lake Lanier - cool, drizzling, and very windy. None of that makes sense here in GA for July!! Johnny and I found good topwater action for most of the day. We worked chug bugs around the breaks of long running rocky points near the mouths of creeks for most of our bites. We also ducked back into a few of the larger creeks for some fish as well. The normal structure/brush had fish around it too, but they didn't seem as active as the rock fish. I had some action on the drop-shot too, but the topwater action was better, so we abandoned thoroughly fishing the spots and just went running and gunning. One of Johnny's best fish is pictured here, and I should have one too, but I "rookied" a toad first thing in the AM on the chug bug - I must have been rusty from all the salt water this week!

Hey Everyone -

I was out on trips all week - lots of great fishing despite the rising water temps over the past few days.

I did both artificial and spot-tail trips this week, with the artificials producing the best fish by far. We worked topwater, drop-shot worms, and texas-rigged worms for our best fish. The topwater activity seemed to get better as the day progressed. We found that you could launch a bait at the blow-ups, even after several seconds, and still get them to hit after working the lure all the way back to the boat. The fish seemed to be staying up in the water column after a round of herding bait, and would hit the topwater's when presented. This has not been the case lately, as the fish seemed to come up and go back down quickly.

As far as the spot-tails, now is a great time to get the kids out and fish. The spot-tails work well, especially in the afternoon when the sun is out. It is also a great way to get the feel of a properly fishing a drop-shot - the bite is very similar to what you would experience with a worm or a minnow imitation on a drop-shot rig.

If you are looking to learn the drop shot technique with artificial baits, now is definitely the time. The bite is good most days, and they are definitely eating the drop-shot. I have worked with several clients on mastering the read of your sonar in conjunction with proper presentation. Come on out with me and learn! I have another trip tomorrow, but have some days open at the end of next week.

Lake Lanier Fishing Report: June 2011

Hello Everyone -

Sorry for the long delay in posting a fishing report. I have posted a few reports on the Bass Fishing Home Page, but have not been as active as usual with my posting. I took some time off in late May to attend the Indy 500, which was followed by my mother's passing. Thanks to all of you for your kind thoughts and prayers - they are greatly appreciated. The good news is I see no more distractions in the near future, so onto fishing!

The topwater action and swimbait action remains good, in the early mornings particularly, especially after the rains have came through that have cooled the water temps slightly and increased the oxygen levels near the surface. For topwater, I have been using either a small popper or the smaller sized gunfish in bone color. When the sun is out, I prefer the chrome offerings. As far as swimbaits, take note of the bait fish being chased. If you see them coming out of the water, the chances are the bass are chasing the bluebacks. I have found at times, however, that the fish are focused on smaller baitfish. My advice is to match the hatch - pay attention and vary your baits and presentations. Some of the things I have been using include: Farley Swimbaits, flukes, Spro Swimbaits (to include the BBZ1 Shad), and the S-Waver. A fish-head spin will also work well. Work the upper region of the water column, or count down the bait to the depth the fish are holding if you find they are not coming up. If you graph bait up in the water column, the fish will likely be looking up. On cloudy days, I have also found a jig/twin tail combo to work, and of course, the standard Slongs Shaky Head tipped with your favorite Wackem Crazy Bait offering, dipped in clear or chartreuse JJ's Magic.

As far as locations, I have been focusing on off-shore structure such as long-running points and humps, along with ledges. Focus on the structures that also have good cover on them, such as brush. In low-light or cloudy conditions, the fish are generally roaming in these areas and not locked on the brush. When the sun is out, the fish tend to relate more directly to the brush piles. Focus on those and present your baits directly over the top of them or in them to get bit.

SPOT TAIL MINNOWS - I am now also doing spot tail minnow trips. This is simply a blast in terms of numbers of fish, and certainly you are apt to catch some big ones too. This is a PERFECT option for less-experienced anglers and particularly children - it is a quick and easy technique to master. Jimbo's Lake Lanier Fishing Report: April 29 - May 8, 2011

Hey Everyone -

I have been out on trips almost every day for the last 10 days, plus I fished the Gut Check tournament with Nick Hensley from Hammonds this past Saturday, and then back out on a half-day morning trip on Sunday (yesterday).

We have had some outstanding days for numbers as many trips had over 30 total spots for the day. I have been focusing on sandy pockets with a worm for the numbers fish. These pockets can be main lake, or in the mouths of creeks, but a sandy beach is the key. This pattern will provide lots of keepers up to 2.5 lbs, and a few good ones mixed in. I have been using a 4 inch worm on a 1/8 oz jighead for the most bites.

In addition to the sand bite, I have been playing with the early post-spawners willing to eat topwater and flukes. Some are relating to brush, most are roaming and just relating to the bait in key areas that have deeper water very close, and are not far from spawning flats. Some of these fish are roaming in very deep water, but are not too far from the bank.

For the tournament on Saturday, we focused on the post spawn bite as opposed to the sand bite - not as many bites, but big fish potential. Nick and I only weighed 13 pounds, but lost some donkeys early on top. Nick lost one of the biggest spots I have ever seen hammer a topwater plug - this spot was way over six - and after a long battle, she just simply pulled off. A little later in the AM,I had two well over 5 rolling and nipping at my fluke, but they just would not commit. I am seeing some wolf packs as well with the fish that are relating to the brush - I was about to cast at one around 4 following a 3 pounder Nick had hooked on top, but as I went to cast I heard "he's barely hooked" so I dropped the rod and went for the net - a bird in hand better than 2 in the bush I guess.

All in all, a very fun day and we had our chances to win it, just wasn't to be. We caught the fish we weighed on topwater poppers, flukes, crankbaits, and fish head spins.

Back out Sunday morning with a regular customer and his wife, and I and had one over 5 plaster my rico, and got it caught in the rocks (and broke off) trying to hand it off to my client's wife so she could battle a big spot. Always looking for a way to let them have fun! They both still caught em Sunday AM as it seemed they were eating as well as they were on tournament day.

Lake Lanier Fishing Report: April 10 - 28, 2011

Hello Again Everyone -

I have had trips almost every day over the past 20 days or so, save Easter and Good Friday. I have had the pleasure of taking out some really fun people during that time, and the fish have been cooperating as well. Thank you to everyone for your support of my guide business. I truly love what I do and I feel very Blessed and honored to have your business - THANK YOU!!

Now, onto fishing. We have been averaging about 25 fish a day on each trip, and two days we landed over 40 - no joke. The first day was last week - we were up north, and the fish size was modest at best - our biggest was about 3.5 lbs, and about 25 of the 42 were keepers. Tuesday of this week was also a 40+ day as we boated 44 spots. The size recently has been much better down south as most of the 40 were keepers, and our best 5 were just shy of 19 lbs.

As far as baits, you name it, and we have caught fish on it. A brief summary would include: swimbaits, flukes, Fish Head Spins, Lil Dudes, worms, jigs, spinnerbaits, topwaters, carolina rigs, jerkbaits, and I am sure I am forgetting something. Mix it up and see what is working - the fish change their preferences every day!

The water on the north end is now above 70 at daylight. The south end is about 67 or so depending on where you put in. Numbers have been better up North until recently, but the South end is catching up quickly. It seems the North end is about 10 days to 2 weeks ahead of the South end.

As far as location, we have been hitting steeper banks coming out of creeks, islands, rock points, and main lake pockets for our fish. The depth the fish are holding changes everyday, but the range has been from 3 - 15 feet.

Lake Lanier Fishing Report: March 15-27, 2011

Hello Everyone -

Well, I just finished a 13 day stretch on the water with trips each day. It has been great to be on the water non-stop. I love what I do! Contrary to the nay-sayers on BFHP, I have found the bite to be pretty good each day. There are always exceptions, but overall the fishing has been solid. On sunny days, I am getting bit on flats and key secondary points at the mouths of creeks. The dock bite is also good on the sunny days as many of the fish use the docks to stage prior to the spawn. On cloudy days, the fish roam more, but still can be caught on spawning flats and secondary points. I have also just found a jerkbait bite on the main lake - I believe these fish are just coming up and and are clearly in the pre-spawn stage.

That being said, I also believe that many fish are spawning right now, and some have spawned already. I have seen several pods of bass fry in certain areas, both south and north. I think many of the fish are farther along than most people believe, and can explain the tough bite for many folks. I have just putting the trolling motor down and going fishing. I have found active fish in areas that you may not expect and caught fish in many different locations. So, my advice is to stay on the move until you get bit, and then work that area thoroughly, as you will likely catch more fish in that same area.

Baits of choice:

1. Jerkbait - work these baits around secondary points in pockets along the creek channels and adjacent to main lake. The water has warmed nicely over the past 2 weeks, and the jerkbait bite has gotten steadily better. Fish these baits around docks adjacent to spawning flats as well, especially when the sun is out.

2. Fish Head Spin - I have been working these around shallow secondary points. Slow has still been the ticket - keep the lure in contact with the bottom and wait for the fish to load up - they haven't been eating it agressively on most days.

3. Slong's Shaky Head - I have been working the 3/16 oz Slong's Shaky Heads around the same areas as noted above when the bite is less aggressive. I have been using a Wackem Pointy Tail and Trick Worm in pumpkin green for my bites. I have found fish up on flats too on certain days - look for the "highways" or ditches that feed the flats - the fish will position around docks that are closest to the ditches first.

4. Crankbait - When the morning bite is on, you can pick off some studs with this bait, as you have seen on my blog posts and website. Use something with a tight wobble - work grass/brush flats and secondary points for the best bites.

I expect the fluke bite and swimbait bite to really work well soon too. Keep trying these baits as you are fishing - you just never know when you might collect a good one on these lures.

Hello Everyone -

My apologies for not posting a fishing report lately. The end of January and the first 2 weeks of February were tough on the lake, and I did not have anything spectacular to report.

Thank goodness that spring is here and the weather is cooperating! I have experienced improving success over the past 2 weeks - each day better than the next with the warming temperatures.

I have been doing 3 main things to get bit recently:

1. Jerkbait - work these baits around secondary points in pockets along the creek channels and along main lake. Focus on the pockets that get all day sun as they will warm the fastest. Look to your Northern banks for the best locations. Work the bait slowly with long pauses between snaps of the rod. The jerk around docks is working too - same locations and technique as noted above. Focus on areas with clay and pebble rock.

2. Fish Head Spin - I have been working these around shallow secondary points. Slow has been the ticket lately - keep the lure in contact with the bottom. As the water continues to warm, speed up your retrieve. Experiment - the fish will tell you what they want!

3. Slong's Shaky Head - I have been working the 1/4 oz Slong's Shaky Heads around the same areas as noted above when the bite is less aggressive. I have been using a Wackem Pointy Tail and Trick Worm in pumpkin green for my bites. I have found fish up on flats too - look for the "highways" or ditches that feed the flats - the fish will position around docks that are closest to the ditches first.

Lake Lanier Fishing Report: Dec 28 - Jan 7, 2011

FISHING REPORT:

Hello Everyone -

I hope everyone enjoyed a great holiday season. We here in Georgia are in the midst of one of the worst snow storms that I can remember. It snowed about 6 inches Sunday night, followed by freezing rain and sleet - a mess to say the least - particularly here in GA, where we have almost no snow removal equipment!!

The good news is, the cold weather has brought on a great spoon bite, and it should only get better as the weather stays cold. The cold weather will cause a shad kill, particularly back in the creeks where the threadfins are concentrated, and these conditions help make for a rockin' spoon bite.

I have been working outside creek channel bends that also offer other significant structure nearby - standing timber, roadbeds, brush, etc. The fish have been in 40 - 55 feet of water, and I have been vertically jigging a flex-it spoon on top of them. I have been alternating between a silver and a white spoon based on the sun. Sunny days I favor the silver spoon, cloudy the white. Mainly, I have been using spoons in the 3/4 oz range to get them down a bit quicker. Alter your presentation over these fish in terms of your retrieves to find out how the fish want it on that particular day. Sometimes quick snaps work, sometimes a slow methodical yo-yo seems to work best - just depends.

There are also fish stacked in certain areas of the main lake and at the mouths of creeks - these tend to be the bigger fish from my experience. Work back from main lake humps and points until you hit the 40-50 foot zone and look for the timber or other significant structure on your graph that could offer the fish and bait a haven.

The weather is supposed to clear and warm up by this weekend - once the roads are safely passable, you should get out there with the spoon and go to work! Let me know if I can help - I would love to share this technique with you if you are interested - just call me to book a trip. 770-542-7764

FISHING REPORT:

Fishing has been great the past few days. I have been on an excellent big fish pattern. The bites are limited, but the quality is awesome! I have caught several fish in the 5 lbs class on this pattern, and I expect it to hold for at least the next week based on the weather forecast.

I have been working jerkbaits on shallow rock for my big bites. I have been alternating between slow-rolling these jerbaits and a jerk, jerk, pause retrieve. The fish are on rock points in the creeks as well as some main-lake areas. We have also been catching fish on Kick Bass Jigs with Wackem Jig Trailers in 20-30 feet of water. Lake Lanier Fishing Report: Nov 19 - Dec 5, 2010

FISHING REPORT:
Hello Everyone -

Fishing has remained good at the end of November and into the first part of December. The water stained up during this period due to the recent rains, particularly in certain creeks. The lower main lake has remained clear, and the water temperature has fallen from nearly 60 down to right around the 50 mark. The water level has hung around 1068, which is 3 feet below full pool. During this time, I have been targeting fish from 5 feet to 25 feet of water.

For the deeper fish, I have been using the shaky head/green worm combo as well as a drop-shot. My bait of choice for the drop-shot has been a sunrise pearl sissy worm from Wackem - this is really a great bait, especially when the sun is out. When it is cloudy, I have been using a variety of green-pumpkin combos to get bit. I have been catching some on a spoon as well, but I have not focused on the spoon due to the availability of good fish in shallower water.

For my shallower fish, I have also been using a green shaky head/worm combo for most of my bites. I have been targeting shallow creek channels for these fish. I have also caught a few on flukes and jerk-baits as well in these areas - it just depends on the mood of the fish. Remember, the cloudy days will cause them to become spread out, and search baits should work best - throw Fish-Head Spins or small crank-baits to catch fish in the backs of pockets.

Fishing has been really good the last 10 days. I have had some great trips and great action on the water during that time. Fish are still scattered, but have been easier to catch recently.

I have been working 10-50 feet deep and catching fish everywhere in between. I have been targeting points that kiss into the main lake channel or river channel for my deep fish. I have been using a drop shot mainly - my bait of choice as been a sunrise pearl sissy worm from Wackem - they have really been eating this little guy!

For my shallower fish, I have been using a green shaky head/worm combo for most of my bites. I have been targeting steep rock walls as well as docks with brush in the vicinity for my best and most consistent fish. I have also caught a few on flukes as well in these areas - it just depends on the mood of the fish. Remember, the cloudy days will cause them to become spread out, and search baits should work best - throw fish-head spins or small crankbaits to catch fish in the backs of pockets. On windy days, the blade and jerkbait bite should get going good as well - look on rocky main lake points for this bite.

Lake Lanier Fishing Report: Nov 1-10, 2010

FISHING REPORT:
Hey Gang -

I have been out on several trips over the past couple of weeks and wanted to send everyone an update on the results. Fishing has been good for the most part, but every day is different! As is typical in Fall, the fish are scattered and can be caught in a number of different ways from a number of different locations around the lake.

My best days have included some topwater action - those days just prior to a front have been better. I have actually experienced my best bite on cloudy or rainy days, as I have found the schooling activity to be best then. Check in the mouths of creeks to the mid-points of major creeks to find the schooling action. I have seen literally acres of fish busting at once - it is quite a site! When you see this action, toss your topwater bait into the middle of frey and hold on! I have caught both spots and stripers with this technique - the big spots and stripers often school together. A number of different topwater plugs have been working, including spooks, chugbugs, and flukes. I actually caught a 20 lbs stripe on top last week - I missed out on some good spot action when I was fighting him though!

When the schooling bite is slow, I have been focusing on steep main lake and secondary points. In addition, I have found fish in the pockets towards the back of the creeks. Main lake and creek humps along with long running points have also held fish on certain days, so stay flexible and focus around the brush, particularly on sunny days. I have caught these fish on a shaky head and drop shot mainly. I am dipping ALL of my plastics in JJ's Magic Clear - I just catch more fish that way - no kidding. I have found a variety of plastics to be working, but I really like the Pointy Tail from Wackem - I have been using green pumpkin the most. Lake Lanier Fishing Report - Oct 17-23, 2010

Hello Everyone -

Well, I finally got back on the water this week after experiencing some motor trouble last week - I was off the water nearly 10 days unfortunately - which explains the lack of a fishing report last week - my apologies! I have to say that the folks at Mercury did NOT take care of me, and when presented with the opportunity to do the right thing, they looked the other way. So, I am no longer a fan of Mercury and would encourage each of you to strongly consider your next purchase to not include a Mercury outboard - just my humble opinion after the experience and conversations I had with the Mercury customer service department this past week.

Onto fishing - I was out on a trip Tuesday with Tim - we went on his brand new G3. I found this center console rig to be a geat set up, and one that will ensure Tim and his buddies will be fishing comfortably for years to come. It was Yamaha powered, and ran very smoothly. We focused on boat and electronic set-up. I worked with Tim on explaining his Lowrance GPS/Chartplotter, and teaching him the things for which he needed to look in finding active, feeding fish as well as key structure and cover. We also worked on lake navigation, as Tim was not very familiar with Lake Lanier. Using a paper map as well as his GPS unit, I explained the keys to navigating Lake Lanier as well as map reading to determine areas that are more likely to hold fish than others. Oh yeah, and we made time for fishing too! We caught several fish on a shaky head worm - we targeted bluff rock and brush in 15-20 feet of water. Tim did a great job and learned quickly - I know he will have many great fishing days ahead. Awesome work Tim!

I was also out on Thursday to test run my boat and made time to fish that afternoon. We were experiencing post front conditions, so I focused on finesse fishing for the day. I caught nearly 30 fish, but not much size to them - my biggest was about 2.5 lbs. I again utilized the shaky head worm and drop-shot rig for the majority of my fish. Not suprising for a post-front day. I tried some other techniques without success, but my main concern was ensuring that motor was up to par and running well. All is great on that front, and I am back in business, so to speak!

FISHING REPORT:

I had several trips this week, all with great success. I want to highlight my trip with Ron and Westin. We went out together on Friday and really had a great day. We worked Wackem Worms and Green Yum Houdini worms on a shaky head for our best results - everything we threw was dipped in JJ's Magic Clear - more bites baby! We focused on bluff walls with wood and rock, but the rock was really key. Brush in 15-20 feet was also very productive for us. Westin jumped on 'em right away catching fish on the shaky head - some solid ones too. I also had the pleasure of taking out Waine Pittman on Saturday, a local Atlanta-area pro who was in town to prepare for a late October tournament on Lanier. Waine qualified for the BassMasters Classic 2 years ago, and is an outstanding angler. I showed him some of my hotspots on the lake - we caught over 20 for the day, with Waine connecting on a 4 1/2 pound lip for big fish of the day. Waine and I worked the shaky head again for our best results - steep rock and brush were the keys. Topwater has been hit or miss, but we caught some good ones this week on a regular pop-r at daylight. My biggest was 3.5 lbs, and they were agressive hits! Check it out each day - I expect this to get better in the days ahead. I also had a trip on Sunday with Kurt and Dave - we caught a few on the shaky head in the AM on rocky bluffs, but had the day cut short by motor trouble. FISHING REPORT:

The cooler weather this week brought a BIG improvement to the fishing! In the mornings, I have been pitching 1/2oz Kick Bass Jigs with Wackem Crazy Craw trailers to shallow grass and cover in the back of creeks to catch fish. There are also fish on key pieces of shoreline cover. Work these areas carefully with a Kick Bass Jig or a Wackem pointy tail worm on a 3/8oz jig-head for best results. A buzzbait has been working well in the AM for some better fish - I am working the bait over the grass as well as the steep rock walls up north - look for transition changes in the bank to produce the best fish. Also, I am happy to report that there are still schooling fish in the lower lake. A variety of topwaters will work if you can get it in the middle of the frey when the fish are busting blue backs on the surface. I prefer the walking baits like a Spook, but others will work as well. I have found areas around the mouths of the creeks to be most productive, but you can see the schooling in many other places also. Sun is key for the schooling bite - afternoons seem to be the best time to target these fish. A drop-shot is still working in the brush - I have been targeting brush in 15-20 feet of water for these bites. I expect the cooling weather to really keep the fish active over the next few weeks - NOW is the time to go - let's get out there!! Lake Lanier Fishing Report - September 18-25, 2010

Hello Everyone!

Fishing Report: Fishing of late has been tough, but I did manage some good fish through the week in preparation for the Camp Sunshine Tournament this weekend. Steve Cox and myself fished the tournament together - we did well in practice and found my shallow jig fish to still be there. We had some back-up areas down south as well, and used both of them in the tournament. Our morning holes produced 2 solid fish, and we could only manage one more keeper in the afternoon. We weighed 5 pounds on a day when double digit weights were rare. I did learn a new trick to catch finicky fish that I used in the tournament and that I will be sharing with my trips in the coming weeks - I know this will only get better and is a secret West Coast technique - call me to book a date and learn! In the mornings, I have been pitching Kick Bass Jigs with Wackem Crazy Craw trailers to shallow grass and cover in the back of creeks to catch fish. The size has been respectable - 2-3lbs range for most. There are still schooling fish in the lower lake, but this is not nearly as strong a pattern as in recent weeks. Lake Lanier Fishing Report August 29 - Sept 3, 2010

Hey Gang!

Fishing Report: I Kicked some Bass this week! The cooler weather has already brought some good fish shallower. I found fish very shallow in the early AM in the creeks, and then gradually fished deeper as the day progressed. Later in the day, I caught fish off of laydowns close to deep water, as well as rocky bluffs. I dipped my 1/2 oz, football head pumpkin-green Kick Bass Jig (with purple and orange accents) in JJ's Magic Clear - and they bit and held on! I caught several fish over 2 lbs, and my biggest was close to 4 lbs. Also, as the day progressed, I threw the Fish Head Spin on windy points and bluffs and caught several using a medium retreive with pauses - contact with the bottom was important. I was also able to find some schooling fish when I was out, but they are tougher to catch. The best way to catch these fish is to have a topwater bait at the ready, and sling it in the middle of the surface action when you see it. Work it quickly in the middle of the frey and hold on! Fishing Report: I was out 4 times this week with mixed results. I was able to find some schooling fish each day I was out, but they are tough to catch. The best way is catch these fish is to have a topwater bait at the ready, and sling it in the middle of the surface action when you see it. A bone gunfish was my choice for topwater - you can also throw a fish-head spin through these surface fish and catch them as well. Use a medium-fast retrieve with intermittent jerks to create reaction strikes. I also expounded on the steep bank fish pattern from last week. We worked Wackem Crazy Baits on red clay and rock bluff walls. The fish were holding at the end of cover, such as laydown trees or brush that was in the 20 foot zone. I have to say, I was impressed with the Wackem Baits - they offer a great selection of baits that hold up to to repetitive fish and maintain their scent as well. Scott and the team over at Wackem have it going on - thanks to Steve for turning me on to these awesome baits!! My favorite is the Pointy Tail Worm, with the Wild Thing (as a jig trailer or fished alone on a jig head or pegged sinker rig) a close second. Fishing Report: Fishing has been bit tougher out on the pond of late. The top-water bite has been spotty at best, and the swim bait bite is hit or miss as well, depending on the weather and water conditions. I did some exploration this week up North and found some interesting results. We caught fish by pitching a Kick Bass Jig into shallow cover in morning in the backs of pockets and creeks, and then moved out to steeper walls with isolated cover to keep getting bit as the day progressed. The fish were surprisingly shallow in the morning, as we caught fish in 2 feet of water or less. I tipped my Kick Bass Jig with a pumpkin green Yum Twin Tail Trailer dipped in JJ's chartreuse dye. The drop shot is still working as well in the lower lake, but the size of the fish has not been as good as in week's past. The pink Roboworm as well as the pumpkin green/watermelon-red colors have been my choices for the drop shot. After Cody's success with the Cross-Tail Shad, I started throwing some of those baits he gave me during our trip, and they worked! And of course, I dip all of my plastics in JJ's to get more bites. As Kevin Hawk demonstrated, the Fish Head Spin tipped with a super fluke Jr. fished above the brush is working as well when the fish are active. Fishing Report: The topwater and swimbait bite remains strong on Lanier. When the fish are active, they will eat these baits very well. The chrome Super Spook continues to be key for topwater fish - and I have found that fish we have caught on top are the better fish by far. A good strategy right now to accumulate weight during sunny days is to run and gun the brush with top water - the good fish are there, and they will eat. While the sun is still a plus, the morning bite seems to be improving as well. Make sure to check the Buford Dam Generation Schedules by calling 770-945-1466. The fish bite better in the current. Both the "old" and "new" brush are producing for me. Not every hole produces, but it doesn't take long to figure out if they are active when you stop - your first 2 or 3 casts to the right spot will tell the story. The drop shot is still working as well, but the size of the fish has not been as good as in week's past. The pink Roboworm as well as the pumpkin green/watermellon-red colors have been my choices. As far as recent hotspots on the lake, I would highly suggest the brush in front of the navigation bouy near Clip 394, as well as the brush noted in Clip 44 and Clip 58. Fishing Report: Things have been changing on the water the past few days. The mid-day topwater bite has came back strong - which is great to see! Also, fish are feeding shallower than in the past few weeks. I am consistently catching fish in the 15-25 foot depths when the sun is out and the wind is blowing, both on topwater and a drop-shot. Previously, my better fish were coming from the 25-30 foot range. Watch your electronics - when the bait and fish start hanging out in that 10-20 foot depth range, it should be "game on" for the topwater bite! My best top water action has came on a chrome super-spook. The chrome really seems to be key for topwater fish - and I have found that fish we have caught on top are the better fish by far. A good strategy right now to accumulate weight during sunny days is to run and gun the brush with top water - the good fish are there, and they will eat. Both the "old" and "new" brush are producing for me. I have been out on the lake a good bit for the past 2 weeks, save the holiday - man it is nuts out there on a holiday weekend! I stay away if possible! Anyway, the cooler weather we experienced recently really helped with the topwater bite. The topwater bite had nearly vanished with the late June heat wave, but was back on again after the cool down. The water temps dropped almost 5 degrees as a result of the cool nights, and calling them up out of the brush on topwater became a viable pursuit once again! They were eating Sammy's, Flukes, and a Gunfish pretty well. We got into some solid fish on top especially this past week, tangling with several 4 lbs + fish. When the topwater action died,the drop-shot was the ticket. The fish actually moved to some of the more shallow brush/structure at one point this week - there was more action up in 15-20 feet of water than out deep. Interesting to see, and fun to catch them on top again. I have a great week coming up including a trip with another FLW pro - I know we are going to have a great day! I had two guide trips this week. I had pleasure of guiding an FLW Pro this week that was in town to prepare for the cup. I gave him a great perspective of the lake and showed him some key areas where they are biting now, as well as where they should be biting in August. We caught our fish on a drop shot - our biggest was over 3 pounds, but he broke one off after a long fight that was most certainly in the 5 pound range. This angler (I will keep his name of the blog out of respect for him) was from the Western division, and he was AMAZING with a drop shot. He is a fantastic guy and an incredible angler - I wish him well in the Cup! I also had the pleasure of taking out a father/son team for a trip later in the week. We had a great time, and found some topwater fish for them, even in the heat. We got fish to come up on a Sammy and a Fluke. We caught our bigger fish on a drop shot, including a spot over 3, and a 5 pound largemouth. Lake Lanier Fishing Report - June 6th - 12th, 2010

Hello Everyone -

My apologies to all for my lengthy absence from this report. My father passed away on May 15th, and as you can imagine, I was unable to get on the water for awhile, and therefore had nothing to report. I am writing this week's report in honor of my father, Alex, who instilled the love of fishing in me at an early age, one of the many things he did for which I will remain forever grateful.

I was out on the Lake 2 days this week and really caught them. We caught fish on topwater throughout the day - all off of humps and brush piles on the main lake and in the mouth's of major creeks. I have been throwing Zara Spooks, Rico's, and mainly a Gunfish to generate my strikes. A medium to fast retrieve seemed to work best - anything to mimic the blue-herring shad skittering on the surface! I know some other baits are working well now too, but I can't bring myself to put down the topwater plugs when they are eating them so well!

Lake Lanier Fishing Report May 3 - 8, 2010

I was out on the Lake 3 days this week and did great...until the CBC Tournament on Saturday - of course! Wednesday and Thursday were both great days for numbers and size. We caught fish on topwater each morning - my lure of choice was a black and chrome chug bug. I caught fish on 4 consectutive casts at our first stop Thursday morning in Six Mile. I also found a strong Shakey Head bite out on the Main Lake - we caught several solid fish in the 3 lbs to 4 lbs range. My fish have been coming on rocky/clay banks and points both in the creeks and on the main lake. I know that is all about to change as the fish continue moving out post-spawn, but for now, they still seem to be up there good. I also had the pleasure this week of taking a client out on a guide trip. We utlilized the LanierMAPPED.com info and got on fish! Ross had a great time and really caught 'em Wednesday. I have attached some pictures from the trip. The weather was awesome, and we had a great day together! Thanks Ross! The CBC Tournament was a great event and the church raised some much-needed funds for their youth ministry. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported this great cause! The highlight of my tournament was spending an hour and a half fishing out my spinning rod that got launched over my bow (thanks to my trolling motor kicking on)as I was trying to measure a fish. The fish was 15 inches, and I got my rod back. Happy ending I guess, but overall I did not adjust as I needed to on the water with the weather change. I caught allot of fish, but their heads were too close to their tails! Next time!!

My fishing time was limited - I got out Monday and Friday afternoons of this past week. Monday was the best day by far, as I boated several solid fish on a weightless fluke that I fished around shallow docks in Six Mile Creek. They were taking the bait on the fall - in about 3-4 feet of water - fun to watch! I also caught 3 on a Horny Toad frog retrieved through the buck brush and grass on the bank in Six Mile Creek. My Monday trip was limited by dead batteries, so I ended up floating with the wind quite a bit - but still caught fish. Richie Rich and I got out together on Friday afternoon, but the bite was tough. We boated a few fish on a fluke in YD Creek, but that was it. We fished until 10 PM, but the bite did not improve after dark - dissapointing. I heard Saturday was great though!!

Fishing this week was great. The spotted bass are active and "junk fishing", as I am sure you have read from many others, is quite appropriate now. I was able to find some good topwater fish this week on a Rico, fished around rock, clay, and sandy areas both in the main lake and in creeks. I believe some of these are spawners, with feeders mixed in. I also caught fish in these same areas on a fish head spin and a scrounger spin, along with a fluke. My best results, however, came on Thursday afternoon, again in these same areas, with a shaky head/green finesse worm combo. I caught several solid fish on this bait with my largest being just under 4 lbs. They were all very shallow (less than 6 feet) and the worm fish all appeared to be pre-spawn. They are quite spunky now with lots of jumping - they really put on a show. My arms were sore on Friday from setting the hook so much!! That's what they call a good pain....

Lake Lanier Fishing Report, April 11-17, 2010

Hello Everyone -

I would like to start this week's report with an exciting announcement regarding LanierMAPPED.com. I am extremely happy to report that Eric Aldrich (AKA EZSpin) has joined the LanierMAPPED.com Pro Staff! He is an accomplished tournament angler, fishing product representative, and an expert on Lake Lanier - I know his contributions will add a great new dimension to the LanierMAPPED.com product experience!

Onto fishing and this week's Lake Lanier Fishing Report! I was out 3 times this week, and found the bite to be good every day. I was able to find a number of different viable patterns through the week that produced fish - always nice to have options! My strongest pattern seems to remain the slow tapering clay/rock/sandy primary and secondary points/shelves around the lake. Fish on these are shallow and have been coming on flukes, crankbaits, and FHS. As you may know too, there are plenty of spawning fish in the backs of pockets. These spotted bass can be taken on a number of baits to include topwaters such as a Rico. Lots of fun can be had with a Horny Toad frog now as well - buzz it through the grass in the back of the creeks and hang on! You can also fish for the actual bedders you see, but that can be a long process sometimes and not something I usually focus on, but it can be a good tournament strategy. Richie Rich got out with me this week and we had a good day on the water together - his was "gooder" than mine - LOL! He always seems to do better from the back of my boat - maybe next time I will make him drive!

Report for April 5th-9th, 2010

Well anglers, Lake Lanier Fishing remains hot!! Great week - fish were on! Caught some short fish on a jerkbait this week, as well as some shaky head fish back in the pockets. The real action this week for me came on the main-lake with a FHS and a crankbait - caught some good fish - biggest was right at 5 pounds - check out the pics!! Still working shallow/slow-tapering rock/clay points with the FHS - slow rolling seems to work best for me - same with the crank - slow.

My partner Rich and I were at the BFL weigh-in today (Saturday) at Laurel Park and filmed the event. Look for the video to be posted on our site later this week. Richie Rich goes fishing

Howdy folks! Well I was able to get Richie Rich out from behind his computer long enough to wet a hook this week. It was his first time fishing in months and he spanks me from the back of my own boat so how do you like that! We actually had a pretty good day on Wednesday even though the front moved in sooner that expected. We used clips from the Gainesville Marina and Chattahoochee River areas to zero in on some fish and wound up with a pattern that called for secondary points with chunk rock. These points needed to be a little on the shallow side. Our fish came in less than 10 feet of water.

I fished again on Friday mostly just scouting for the March of Dimes/American Protiens tournament. I'll be fishing that one with Toby Hicks from the ABA. Check in here for my report Saturday evening (ok maybe Sunday).

Rich will be video-taping the MS Benefit tournament on Carter's Lake on Saturday. Louie Bartonfield is fishing that one as well as our buddy Matt Driver from ProAngler Radio. Pastor Rick Shoup of the Chattahoochee Baptist Church might be fishing that one if he can get off of FR (fishing restriction). Rich will have the video up on the LanierMAPPED.com site sometime mid next week.

Hey don't forget the Chattahoochee Baptist Church has another benefit tournament on Lanier April 3rd from Little Hall. That one will guarantee another $1,500 first place check! Jimbo's Lake Lanier Fishing Report - March 15, 2010

Howdy folks - hope everyone is doing great and enjoying the warmer weather (Finally!)

Well, I got back out on Lake Lanier this afternoon - what a difference some warm days make! I had a great day for numbers - caught 14 total, broke off 3 on hook sets, and missed several other bites. My biggest was 3.4, but I caught a lot of solid fish. Every single one of my fish came on a 1/4 oz. brown Spot Remover jig with a green Yum Twin Tail trailer. I also used the YUM Crawfish scent on my jig - not sure it helps, but thought I would include that. All of the fish I found today were around docks in shallower pockets - all fish were in less than 10 ft of water. I fished above Browns Bridge most of the day. I believe the fish are finally moving up in force, and hopefully will stay there for awhile, unless the weather turns real cold again.

I found some good warming water today, and marked 55.4 degrees in one pocket - I caught back to back 3 pounders in that area off the SAME spot on a dock - that was awesome! Make sure to get your jig up in the docks as far as possible - that is key. As far as the break-offs, I surmised that those occured based on the locations I was fishing. Most of the docks from which I caught fish had that buck brush growing around it, and I believe my line fell victim to those bushes. That stuff is tough on line. I felt certain that one of the break-offs was a big fish, just based on where it was, and how the bite felt - you know what I mean guys - it just had that certain "feel".

Hello fellow anglers! Hope everyone is well and loving the snow! What a disappointing site - I was hoping the fish would be moving up to start their "process" anytime, but I am fearful this shot of bad weather may delay things further.

I went fishing on Monday - overall, I thought the lake looked pretty good. The lower lake, including the creeks was really starting to clear up. The upper section (above Browns Bridge) was still quite stained. Water temperatures were definitely on the rise - I marked as high as 48 degrees in a few spots - back in the pockets off main lake. I really expected to get more bites somewhere in those pockets based on the sunshine and warming weather. They were hard to come by. I thought I would have seen more action on a day like that - especially pre-front. I only fished from 1 PM to 6 PM - maybe it was a morning bite!

I will be hitting the lake again later this week (if the snow stops!) and will report back on my findings. If the shallow areas fall again, I will move back out and try some of the deeper ledges and see what I find...these fish have to get busy soon - it's March!
